The stink bugs are taking over my house!  Help!

Well, if you’ve ever thought (or yelled!) this, you’re not alone.  The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug has become a major problem throughout North America.  These little pests invade our home through many tiny entrance ways, and while there are a number of preventative measures that will help keep the stink bugs out, if your home is already infested, none of those measures will matter!

Fortunately, with the invasion of stink bugs has come an invasion of weapons to be used in the war against stink bugs.  Dozens of indoor stink bug traps have recently appeared on the marketplace, and many of them actually work!

We have scoured the marketplace and tested a number of indoor stink bug traps, and have reviewed them for you here. This is not a ranked list – these aren’t in any kind of order – but all of the traps reviewed here have shown that they effectively help control stink bug populations in the home.

Rescue Reusable Stink Bug Trap

The Rescue Reusable Stink Bug Trap works best if placed in a darkened area of the home where stink bugs are known to be.  It lures and captures the stink bugs without the use of chemicals or any type of smelly bait.  It uses a blue LED light to attract the stink bugs, which then crawl into the trap and become trapped in a chamber inside.

Pros: 

No chemicals

No bait to replace, trap continually works

Uses safe, non-toxic LED

Battery pack is included for use in areas (like attics) without electricity

Cons:

Needs to be plugged in to an electric outlet or powered by batteries

Does not kill the stink bugs immediately; stink bugs dehydrate over time in the trap.

Nth Solutions: Indoor Stink Bug Trap

The Original Indoor Stink Bug Trap from Nth Solutions relies on the stink bugs’ own natural instincts.  When the stink bugs are awakened from their winter hibernation, they seek food and light.  This is a lighted trap that works in conjunction with a simulated food source.  The concentrate solution provided smells like food to the stink bugs, which are then drowned in the solution.

Pros:

Non-toxic

Kills stink bugs, doesn’t just trap them

Trap solution coats the stink bugs and drowns them in a way water alone cannot.

Cons:

Requires electric outlet; no battery pack available

Concentrate solution needs to be refilled every 4-5 days.

Biocare Indoor/Outdoor Stink Bug Traps

Biocare Indoor/Outdoor Stink Bug Traps rely on a lure which releases a pheromone known to attract stink bugs.  The trap is lined with glue, and the stink bugs will stick to the inside of the trap upon entering.  The pheromone in the trap can remain effective up to 6 weeks, and the traps are disposable, making the job of getting rid of the dead stink bugs a piece of cake.

Pros:

Disposable trap makes clean up easy

Traps can be used indoors and outside

Cons:

Trap should be kept away from pets and children

Glue is extremely sticky and touching it needs to be avoided

Strube’s Bug Light Trap

Strube’s Bug Light Trap for Stink Bugs uses a combination of several different methods to trap and eliminate stink bugs indoors or out.  A light serves dual purposes of getting the attention of the stink bugs and heating the special attractant scent to spread it’s aroma.  Once inside the trap, stink bugs get stuck onto the slue-trap sleeve.  When the sleeve is full it simply slides off of the trap and into the garbage.

Pros:

Disposable trap makes clean up easy

Non toxic

No need for scent refills

Cons:

Trap needs to be plugged into an electric source

Glue sleeves need to be replaced when full
